Torfaen CBC – Ken Jones

Our brief was to manage a public art memorial to Ken Jones, Welsh rugby international and local hero to Blaenavon, working with the steering group to agree a brief and manage activities going forward.

Following a call out to UK sculptors we agreed a shortlist of artists to invite to a briefing session, site visit and meetings with participating locals – this briefing session was filmed by a group of local school children to be shown at the school and future fundraising events. The shortlisted artists then spent time preparing their response, in the form of sketches and maquettes to present to the steering committee. We thoroughly discussed each proposal with the committee before the winning artist was selected and formally contracted.

Art Acumen arranged the artist’s contract and made studio visits to sign off the work at the various making stages. We selected the stone plinth from the local quarry, arranged for the sculpture’s foundations to be designed constructed and installed and coordinated with highways for the sculpture to be delivered and installed. We kept everyone informed and involved throughout the process with regular press releases and a local exhibition.

Our overarching aim is to enhance people's lives through creating high quality, engaging and memorable places for people to live and work in.
