The Hickman Art Programme: Nocturnal Creatures

GPE’s Hickman building is an award-winning sustainably designed new workspace in Whitechapel with creativity, collaboration and socialising at its core. Art Acumen are working closely with GPE to curate engaging exhibitions and creative experiences for the buildings’ tenants and local community.

Art Acumen brokered a collaboration between GPE and the Whitechapel Gallery, with the specific aim of opening up The Hickman to the wider community.

The partnership resulted in Hickman being a host venue for Nocturnal Creatures, a festival curated by the Whitechapel Gallery connecting local communities and transforming East London through immersive film, music, performance, art and DJ sets. The event was free and open to all, taking place in venues within walking distance of the Gallery.

The Hickman, located on the Gallery’s doorstep, was transformed from office space to the home of performance, music, film and DJ sets from Nabihah Iqbal and friends, as she paid homage to Whitechapel’s heritage as home to one of London’s oldest South Asian communities. Nabihah Iqbal is a musician, producer, DJ and broadcaster from London. She graduated from Soas University of London with a degree in ethnomusicology and history and trained as a human rights lawyer before turning to a career in music. She is currently an artist-in-residence at London’s iconic cultural institution, Somerset House, where she is writing and recording her second album.
